Michael Jackson finalises the purchase of ATV Music Publishing for US$47.5 million, gaining control of a major catalogue that includes many Lennon-McCartney songs.

The deal becomes one of the most important business moves of Michael’s career. It changes his position from performer and songwriter into a major music-publishing owner.

The purchase also creates lasting tension with Paul McCartney, who had previously discussed publishing ownership with Michael.
