Michael Jackson at the Victory Tour press conference, 5 July 1984.

The day before the Victory Tour opens in Kansas City, Michael holds a press conference responding to public backlash over the tour”s mail-order ticketing system. Triggered in part by an open letter from 11-year-old fan Ladonna Jones — who accused the group and their promoters of being “selfish and just out for money” — Michael announces that the lottery-only ticketing scheme will be scrapped in favour of traditional sales, that fans should not have to pay before being guaranteed a seat, and that his entire share of tour proceeds will be donated to charity.

His share — roughly million — would ultimately be split between the T.J. Martell Foundation for Leukemia and Cancer Research, the United Negro College Fund and Camp Ronald McDonald for Good Times.
